“The concept was born out of a play that one of the group was doing in her
drama lesson. It was about the concentration camps and they were advertising
Zyklon B, a cyanide-based pesticide used in the Holocaust.
“She suggested that the group did a ‘backwards advert’ to showcase the effects
of smoking. They scripted it all themselves, they storyboarded it - they did
everything. They should be so proud of it. I know I am!
“Just watching how they took ownership of it, I just thought it was brilliant.
It’s given me the inspiration to let my students take the lead on more projects.
“From a teacher’s point of view, the Cut Films project is fantastic from beginning
to end. It was brilliant to have the youth worker come in and work with the kids.
They did an interactive workshop, with a lot of interesting information – about smoking and also child labour –
and it really resonated with the students.
“But it was the way in which it was presented – they didn’t just preach about the perils of smoking. This meant
the students were truly engaged with the subject matter. It’s because of that I truly believe the impact of this
project will stay with them for a long, long time.”
